“Portrait engraving is the dying art of creating a life-like portrait using intersecting lines, dashes and dots. Traditionally, engravings would have been made directly into a metal plate. Today, the handful of people who make engraved portraits do so on a tablet. In this case, I use my new iPad Pro. Engraved portraiture is the main technique used to draw the faces on banknotes- I learnt how to make engravings by looking over the shoulder of engravers in a banknote-printing facility design office. Engraved portraits range from illustrative, to completely photo-realistic. It is quite amazing what can be achieved just by drawing lines and dots.”
