TV SMASH (2008) – me and a friend collected up old TVs and smashed them to pieces in a forest. This was a performance/ritual, signifying the official end of television, and the arrival of P2P sharing and YouTube. This inspired WE ARE WITNESSING… a video made specifically for a miniature LCD screen, with bespoke formica and wood casing, and a ‘broken’ screen. As an object, the work is halfway between a retro 1980’s television, and the miniature idiot devices we have today; seemingly caught out-of-time in an alternate reality.
The video itself is made from clips downloaded from YouTube. They self-referentially point to the act of breaking glass, the music they are transformed into, and the means by which they are ‘broken’, via editing alone (no effects, apart from overlaying clips).
